WORKSHOPS for SCHOOLS and ART SOCIETIES

Grasping the Unconventional, Improvisation in Watercolour, Gouache & Ink

The aim is to explore and demonstrate some of the myriad applications and textures that can be achieved using a combination of ink 'watercolour and gouache with organic or 'found' materials.

Understanding the unique properties of various mediums and their combination with 'commonplace' materials is an enlarging experience. The effects are in the main both spontaneous and beautifully organic.

These classes can be a little like a day off, devoted to experimentation and accidental discoveries. How do I give the impression of being underwater? What possibilities are suggested by this angular and burnt texture? If I dragged a feather dipped in ink, could I make it appear as a waterfall?

There is a cornucopia of everyday materials at our fingertips - old metal alphabet stencils used for the extravagance of their shapes rather than any literal meaning. Grasses bedded in gesso, eggshells, seashells and seaweed. With a little care and a few elementary rules it is possible to create challenging images, both bold and subtle.

Oil Painting - Equipment, Materials, Procedures & Techniques

A full day's 'hands-on' practical course on the many methods and techniques involved in oil painting, with a particular emphasis on the 'mechanics' of the painting process. Ranging from the selection and preparation of grounds and supports through to a discussion on pigments and permanence and the application of binders, mediums and solvents. Special weight is stressed on the non-toxic use of materials.

All materials are provided inclusive in the fee.
